Small Talk & Smiles offers a wide range of supports including speech and language assessments, speech-language screenings, individual therapy sessions, family coaching, and group classes.
Many pediatric speech therapy sessions include toys and games, but this doesn't define them as play-based sessions.
At Small Talk & Smiles, we believe having fun isn't extra- itβs essential for progress. Every activity is thoughtfully chosen, child-led, and designed to support communication in ways that feel natural, engaging, and meaningful to each child and their family. Therapy here is personal. Sessions are shaped around your childβs interests, your familyβs routines, and the skills that matter most for real life.
No clinic, no waiting room, no kids' table in a tiny office. Children learn best where they have fun, learn, and grow. THIS has always been my vision for private practice. I travel to your home, your child's daycare, grandma's house, the backyard, the playground wherever your child is most comfortable and most themselves. Real connection and conversations happen in real places, with friends, family, and community members. When you learn how to incorporate your child's strengths, use strategies and visual supports within their everyday routines, those tools become second nature. That's when the real magic happens and we see progress continue beyond our weekly sessions together. The conversation shifts FROM "He is struggling when he is away from me at the child-watch" TO "We shared some of our home strategies with the child-watch teacher and now she has an easier time understanding him, so she can help when he gets upset."
I provide in-person services to families throughout Brunswick County and the Wilmington area. Telehealth is also an option for families living outside the service area.
Evidence based practices are implemented throughout our sessions with a stronger focus on family education and family implementation of the coaching plan we develop together. You choose what you need the most support with and we build stepping stones moving towards your BIG goal. Here are just a few support requests I've received from families: following directions at school and/or home, potty training communication supports, points and leads adults to what he wants instead of using words. Coaching sessions are a flat fee and not reimbursable by insurance.
* has a child they suspect may be presenting with early childhood stuttering but is not a strong candidate for weekly stuttering therapy.
* has a child who would benefit from supports because they are struggling in certain areas, but they did not "qualify" based on another evaluator's set standards.
* is already receiving speech-language therapy privately or through the school system, but require more support and guidance to meet their child's needs.
* can't commit to bi-weekly or weekly sessions due to budget or schedule constraints
* Lives outside NC or the USA and is having difficulty finding a play-based SLP in their area. Virtual sessions are available to families anywhere with a strong internet connection
* is on a waitlist for an evaluation or services and wants support now while they are waiting
* has a late talker and wants to learn more ways to support their child's communication

At this time, we are in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield and accept private pay. Some families with different insurance carriers choose to use their out of network (OON) benefits to utilize their own insurance plans. I will supply families with an itemized receipt (also called a super bill) that they can submit to their insurance.
Prior to starting services, it is the caregiverβs responsibility to contact their insurance plan to secure any necessary pre-authorizations. I have a βinsurance cheat sheetβ available to help navigate your conversation with insurance so you know what you need to start services.
